In 2009 the NPHCDA renovated around 500 health centres nationwide to improve access to basic health care services for Nigerians. In addition to the renovations, 175 new health care centres were planned for 2010 to further improve accessibility.
As part of the infrastructure upgrade, all of the centres were fully stocked with the necessary basic equipment and medical supplies. All of the centres support monitoring and coordination of AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis and malaria services at primary care level.
The Agency also took care to ensure staff based at the centres took part in training and workshops and gained the support of influential women and leaders in the communities surrounding the centres to gain better health outcomes.
The building initiative supports our goals to control preventable diseases and improve access to basic healthcare services. It’s also helping us achieve our Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to combat AIDS/HIV, malaria and other diseases.
